Since I was a kid back in the 60’s, I wanted to cook with Camp Ovens. I gave it a try after watching Johnny on TV some years back. Now I use them whenever I can!

I’ll chime in on the cast iron/egg debate. Here goes….For eggs over easy, fried sunny side up; use a little oil or for butter a generous pat or two. For scramble eggs, cast iron or not you should cook them on low heat. Eggs are full of protein which when introduced to high heat becomes rubbery. It takes a little longer but cook scramble eggs on LOW heat with some oil or butter and when they are done they should release from cast iron pans easy and with little to no loss of egg stuck to frypan

@VonMilash if your skillets are “very nicely seasoned” then eggs would not stick to them. i can fry an egg over easy with a teaspoon of oil in my lodge. try using oil instead of butter, and try getting the oil hot before dropping the egg in…im just trying to give advice here bc it seems like you are having alot of problems frying eggs in your skillet and it should def not be the case.

  • VonMilash:

of COURSE not!!! >:( ;) maybe i just godda use more butter or something. but my cast iron pieces are very nicely seasoned.

  • 88joemomma:

@VonMilash if your skillet is seasoned properly then there is no better skillet to cook eggs in than a cast iron skillet. do you wash your skillet with soap when you clean up?

  • Mr40up:

how about exporting lodge products to australia so we can buy them of the shelf in australia, the postage is a killer to have them sent here. camp chef export there products to australia , but i have never seen any lodge products.

    I love using cast iron!
For cooking eggs I heat the pan then add a little square of butter, spread it around then add my eggs. My eggs always slide right off onto the plate ;-)

  • iDeist:

My pleasure, and best of luck with the eggs.

  • VonMilash:

well, by that video ( and i love Dave’s vids) I’d say I have been proven wrong. Not sure why I can’t results then. but again, even in this vid, the scrambies clearly stuck badly. maybe ill try real butter and a do a SSU to see if that helps…it might simply be a scrambled egg thing or my choice of fat to fry in. thanks for the reply.

  • iDeist:

Von, that’s not true at all. Watch the video titled “Cast Iron Breakfast: Cooking Eggs” on Youtube. Its actually quit easy to cook eggs on cast iron.

  • VonMilash:

Thanks for the reply… my skillets are exceptionally seasoned, I never wash with soap, and I almost never cook on more than medium heat unless searing a steak. Bottom line, eggs don’t like cast iron. Take a look at 6:17-6:20. The fact that there’s that much egg to scrape off means the the two just don’t like each other. A food item should NEVER stick like that. If it does, it was cooked on the wrong surface.

  • Trocar72:

Make sure your skillet is seasoned. Don’t cook your eggs on high heat, remember…cooking with cast iron it heats evenly and retains the heat. So if it’s on medium heat, after about ten minutes it’s like cooking on high, so control the heat.

Never wash your iron with soap, hot water with a plastic scraper is enough to clean it.

  • VonMilash:

great stuff. i love cast iron. but i must say, ive never had too much luck cooking eggs with it. they tend to stick. that’s the one thing that i prefer to do on crappy old non-stick.
